Tozo creator Dave O'Connell, Ellen Lindner, Derek the Sheep artiste Gary Northfield and Stitch London head girl Lauren O'Farrell share a pint in Leeds' lovely Adelphi pub.

Thought Bubble 2010: what a crazy ride!

Like many first-time Thought Bubble attendees, I'd never been to Leeds before. After a rocky start - one of the festival attendees got mugged on the first night, which predictably wigged everyone out - we had a lovely time. People loved the brand-new Comix Reader, and Whores of Mensa and Undertow both sold well.

In our downtime, we experienced brilliant typography....

...as well as a brush with actual brilliance, in the form of UK comics expert (and now a proud owner of Whores of Mensa 5!) Dr. Mel Gibson, here in the company of the effervescent Suzy Varty. There was a wonderful-sounding academic conference on women in comics being run in conjunction with the festival, which brought out a lot of really interesting people.

On Sunday, after the hectic frenzy of Saturday's sell sell sell and dance dance dance (BRILLIANT after party!), we enjoyed a tour of Leeds. Not your ordinary tour, though - our hotel had a brochure providing a guide to the city's architecture through statuary appearances of Leeds' civic symbol, the owl.

Here's one at Leeds' famous Corn Exchange, now a place for exchanging cash for vintage clothes and 'gourmet hotdogs' (both highly recommended.)

Owls aside, a big draw for Leeds and Though Bubble was a really sweet show by cartooning genius Kristyna Baczynski, who was kind enough to come along to say hello during the show.

Sat nav tried to drag us to the Ash Blast Car Wash (a cry for help, perhaps?) but we pushed on to Leed's historic Hyde Park Picture House.

Here's the poster for Kristyna's show.

Don't worry ladies, we were not neglected!

The Hyde Park has its own charms - like this fantastic stained-glass window! - and a wonderful history. It dates to just around the start of World War I. We were heartbroken that we couldn't stick around for a showing of Chico and Rita!

Congrats to Kristyna for taking home the Thought Bubble Competition prize two years ago - and extra special congratulations to Good Dog, Bad Dog creator Dave Shelton, for winning this year's prize!

And super-props to Eleanor Davis for doing such amazing illustrations for the convention poster, website and t-shirt. I was pretty psyched to grab one of the red 'Staff' t-shirts - a great souvenir of a great show.

Thought Bubble was a lot of fun - thanks so much to the organizers, and all the cartoonists who gave us some love and said hello. (And extra-special thanks to Stephen Betts, for doing all the driving!)

Oh, and one last thing! You can now pick up your own copy of the brand new The Comix Reader in my Etsy shop!

Thanks for reading...

I used to live opposite the Hyde Park picture house; we'd bring our own cushions.

Lucky you! It looks incredible. Unfortunately we couldn't check out the actual cinema space, since they were showing a film for the festival. Still, nice! And with lovely staff, as well.
