Amsterdam Memories [Nov. 10th, 2011|03:52 pm]
My partner and I just got back from an amazing trip to Amsterdam, a city I'd never visited.

More than most European cities, Amsterdam is beautiful and haunted. The canals are gorgeous, the cafés sublime. But the effects of the Nazi occupation - and the memory of the many people deported from the Netherlands to death camps abroad - pervade the city. I had a bit of a strange moment when I saw 'Lindner' amongst the name of Shoah victims on the wall at the Hollandsche Schouwburg during Amsterdam's epic annual Museumnacht. This place, the last Jewish theater open during the Occupation, was used to round up Jews before deportation - most notoriously, Jewish children.
So...were these Lindners relatives? I don't know - but as with so many places we visited in Amsterdam to which we were directed by friends who thought them important, the Schouwburg made us think.

So, before I get on with sketches of cafés and renovated warehouses on the canals (like the one Anne Frank and her family hid in), a sketch of lovely Anne, patron of a city with a long memory.

As usual I did the ink drawing on the road and then messed around with watercolor and gouache on our return.

Thanks to our friends who showed us around, either by giving us tips or taking us around in person! Thanks Alfred! Thanks, Dave! And thanks to Nick and Isabelle for hosting us in Brussels.
